What To Look For In A Healthy Goat

  • Strong coat: A healthy goat has a strong, glossy coat that is free from parasites. 

  • Clear eyes: A goat's eyes should be clear and bright. 

  • Normal breathing: Breathing should be easy and not labored. Listen for coughing or wheezing. 

  • No unusual discharge: There should be no discharge from the nose. 

  • Normal stool: A healthy goat will not have diarrhea.

  • Alert and active: A healthy goat maintains an alert posture and exhibits high levels of activity. Lethargy can be a sign of illness. 

  • Good appetite: A goat with a healthy appetite is likely a healthy goat. 

Essential care for healthy goats 

  • Nutrition: Goats are browsers that eat a variety of plants and shrubs; however, hay is the primary source of their nutrition. Provide high-quality, mold-free hay. 

  • Water:  Access to fresh, clean water at all times is crucial, especially in cold weather. 

  • Social needs:  Goats are herd animals and should not be left alone. It is best to have at least two goats to prevent stress and nervous behaviors. 

  • Environment:  Ensure they have a clean living area. Monitor for signs of pests or parasites. 

  • Veterinary care:  Regular check-ups with a veterinarian are essential to ensure proper health and to manage any potential health issues.
